“Bargain Nannies”

Hiring a nanny is a big decision; there are many things to consider when deciding to go this route.  Once deciding what your needs are, the next step is to decide what the nanny’s duties will be and to determine the appropriate compensation to offer.  Hiring a nanny can be expensive, but there are pitfalls in hiring a “bargain nanny” who may be just looking for a paycheck instead of viewing this as a career choice and a calling/passion or lack the necessary experience to do the job well.  Stretching to hire a great nanny from an agency is an investment that pays off in massive dividends for your family.

Before hiring a nanny, spend some time contemplating excatly what you are looking for in an ideal candidate.  Will your nanny be responsible for childcare duties solely or will she be in charge of some housekeeping, cooking, running errands, etc.?  The pay scale offered should reflect the responsibilities of the position.  Greater responsibilities and qualifications or education and experience should transate into a higher wage.   If you are looking for someone to help tutor your children and having a college education is important, then you need to consider paying comparable to what such a candidate could command in a career in their field.

Another consideration is how many children will your nanny be caring for;  the wage offered would be different for one infant child versus a family with more children or multiples.  This factor should be continually reevaluated as your family grows and your needs change or the responsibilities of your position evolve and grow.  If you hired your nanny initially to look after only one child but she is still with you two babies later, her wage should reflect these additions.  An annual review and contract renegotiation for an extended period after the first year is a great time to discuss these changes and the resulting actions that may need to be taken as a result.

There are many factors to consider when coming up with an hourly wage or salary for your nanny. Remember that you often get what you pay for and you are entrusting your precious loved ones with this nanny, so don’t go bargain shopping!  This mentality may be appropriate for Black Friday but not when choosing a nanny.

Finding the best nanny

Finding the right person to care for your child is one of the most important decisions you’ll make but it can be a daunting prospect. “A good nanny can make the world of difference,” says Sara Rahmani, founder of Peek-a-boo Childcare, a city based Au-pair and Nannies agency in London. “Find the right person and you’ll be able to leave for work guilt-free, focus on your job when you get there and even enjoy a relaxed evening out, knowing your child is in capable hands.”

Putting up your own adverts, setting up interviews and properly vetting a prospective nanny can be done on your own but it’s a big job. “Parents can make the mistake of trying to meet too many potential nannies. Lots of people traipsing through your house can be tiring for you and confusing to your child,” says Sara.

A detailed set of questions that cover everything from a nanny’s hobbies and interests to what they would feed your child is vital and can be asked over the phone to weed out people who immediately don’t fit the bill. Finding the perfect match takes skill and it’s where an experienced and professional nanny agency can really help.

“A good agency can really save parents time,” says Sara. “We’re not afraid to ask all the important questions to both the family and the prospective carer so only the most suitable matches meet up.”

“At Peek-a-boo we meet our nannies in person at our London office. All our nannies have to have at least 2 years previous experience and we thoroughly check their references, run the necessary police checks/CRB checks etc. We even run in house MNT (maternity nurse training) & first aid courses for nannies and aupairs. Our careful screening process is designed to ensure we only sign up the most suitable carers around for the safely, well being and development of your child. You can’t cut corners here but it’s surprising how many parents do when they’re trying to find someone at short-notice while juggling a hectic work life.”

If you do find an nanny agency to help, ask them about their aftercare services before you sign up. “An agency should be there to support you through the settling-in period and help if things aren’t working out,” says Sara. “It can take time for both sides to adjust to the new set-up but a good agency will know when it’s not right and swiftly match a family with a new nanny if needed.”

An extra pair of hands can really smooth family life. “We keep in touch with families and I hear stories of children brimming with confidence while mum and dad find they’ve suddenly got some quality of life back.”

Choosing the Right Nanny for You

A parent’s natural instinct is to protect and love their child, which is why leaving our children with other people who aren’t relatives or friends is often a very difficult decision to make. However, working full-time or juggling many things often makes it difficult to simply be a parent that is solely a nanny. Therefore, it is essential that if and when you choose to find a nanny you are a 100% happy and comfortable with them as you need peace of mind in order to continue as normal throughout the day.

Peek A Boo Childcare is a Nanny Agency in London that offers you the peace of mind that your nanny is entirely suitable for your child. With relevant qualifications, a nanny is someone who enters into your home to look after your children as you would and they often become a much loved part of the family. This family member feeling is exactly what is necessary for you to feel comfortable leaving your children with someone; as the majority of us would no doubt agree that leaving children with family members is much easier than leaving them with a stranger. What’s more, by employing a nanny who comes into your own you are guaranteeing that your child’s routine and daily needs are catered for. Unlike sending your child to nursery or crèche, your child or children receive the full attention from their nanny, allowing him or her to dedicate their day to continuing the creative, safe environment you have created for your child.

Using Peek A Boo Childcare allows you to find a London nanny that is just the person you are wanting to enter into your home. With the choice of hundreds of London nannies or au pairs you can create an everlasting bond with the nanny of your choice.
